Expect news on a wide variety of independent games updated in Devolver Public Access Holiday Special fashion when it returns next year. Devolver Digital, Inc., established in 2002 and headquartered in Austin, Texas, is an independent video game publisher in the United States.
Nigel Lowrie, Harry Miller, Graeme Struthers, Rick Stults, and Mike Wilson, five executives who had previously worked with Gathering of Developers and Gamecock Media Group, founded the company in June 2009. These two companies had published games on developer-friendly terms but had been acquired and dissolved by larger companies due to the high cost of releasing retail games. Devolver Digital avoided this problem by releasing their games only through digital means.
Devolver Digital got its start releasing HD remasters of the Serious Sam titles. Following the success of these remasters and spin-offs, Devolver Digital began releasing games from other, smaller independent teams, with Hotline Miami serving as one of their early breakout titles. The company also published films under the imprint Devolver Digital Films and owns a sizable stake in film distributor Good Shepherd Entertainment.
The Devolver Public Access Holiday Special is set to make its annual comeback this season, according to Devolver Digital. This year’s iteration of the showcase that introduced the world to Devolver Digital’s distinct design in time for the holidays is expected to include new details on both futures and recently released games.
Devolver Digital hasn’t been as successful as other publishers who focus on triple-A games because of the indie character of the games it promotes. Nonetheless, the American label has assembled a roster that includes Gris, Death’s Door, and Inscription, three of the most promising independent acts in the business.
Two of the most critically acclaimed games of 2022, Cult of the Lamb and Return to Monkey Island, were both published by Devolver Digital this year. These games won the Golden Joystick Award for Best Indie Game and PC Game of the Year, respectively, in November. Both had previously been shown at Devolver Digital conferences, which are known for having a unique and entertaining atmosphere that no other publisher can match.

Unlike its E3 presentations, Devolver’s prior Public Access wasn’t overly flashy, but the company nonetheless maintained its signature sense of humor. An honest tweet from Devolver Digital announced its return, with a link to the YouTube Livestream set to begin tomorrow.
Fans of games that were out this year or are scheduled to come out in 2023 may look forward to “new looks and details on Cult of the Lamb, Stick it to the Stickman, Terra Nil, Anger Foot, and Skate Story,” as stated in the description.

In spite of the description’s final promise that it will be a “very typical and absolutely sane holiday special,” viewers should brace themselves for the unexpected. But since the focus of last year’s Public Access was on fresh content and updates, don’t hold your breath for any major disclosures or announcements, there are still plenty of games to look forward to. Skate Story, first seen earlier this year, takes a spooky approach to the skateboarding genre and could become a compelling alternative to the Tony Hawk series.
Anger Foot, a fast-paced action first-person shooter, got a fitting video this summer revealing a PC release in 2023. Formerly a prototype on itch, the game is now “being developed into a full game,” with a sample available on Xbox.
