The quest designer for The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt recently explained why CD Projekt Red decided to kill off Vesemir. In The Witcher 3, Geralt’s teacher and mentor was a very popular character, but he died young for a reason that was important to the story.
With its emotional, epic story and solid gameplay, The Witcher 3 was called one of the best role-playing games of the last 10 years. Even though The Witcher 3 was a single-player game, it left a lasting impression that is still felt today.
The fact that CD Projekt Red released a next-gen port of the game in December 2022 shows that this is true. Now, even more gamers can play one of the best story-heavy games ever made with even better graphics.
Pawel Sasko, the quest director for The Witcher 3, finally talked about how hard it was to kill Vesemir at the beginning of the game during a recent talk at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. In an interview with IGN, Sasko said that Vesemir was a key character in the books and games, but that he had to die to get Ciri to move the story forward.

He told her that she had to decide that she would no longer be the hunted but would instead become the hunter. Geralt’s search for Ciri is based on this tragic choice, and it led to some of The Witcher 3’s best story arcs.
But making a choice was not easy. Sasko knew that Vesemir was a very important character in the books and that his death would be hard for some people to deal with. So, it took a few talks to finally decide that he should die.
It’s a big deal because it happens after the players get to know him well, and it changes Geralt and Ciri in a lot of ways. His death is pretty much the most important part of the story of the saga, which makes it a game worth spending hundreds of hours on.
Those who miss Vesemir in The Witcher 3 can still see him in action, which is good news. For example, the Netflix animation The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is about a young Vesemir when he was a witcher.
